The Devoteam SDP workgroup has created a white paper to provide a thorough overview of SDP (Service Delivery Platforms) concepts. The SDP concept brings together two worlds with different cultural backgrounds.· Traditional telecom services, characterized by highly specialized ITU-T Intelligent Network protocols and their equivalents in the IP world (typically IMS), career-grade reliability, and high performance concerns. They are usually delivered in embedded real-time environments, and closed proprietary frameworks.· Operators’ information systems and more globally IT frameworks, driven by business services in open environments dominated by Java, Corba, and Windows. The need to master both of them is growing as fast as the interpenetration of the Telecom and Internet worlds.

This white paper has the objective to answer questions about SDPs at every level, addressing issues ranging from business considerations to in-depth technical reviews of the SDP standards. It also aims at being illustrative and concrete, and can be viewed as a tool box that provides many real and detailed service implementation examples based on SDP standards. It can be read by different actors in the SDP business with different profiles: decision makers needing to make sound strategic choices (business executives, consultants, marketers), as well as those more deeply involved technically (infrastructure architects, product line managers), and, of course, service developers, especially those who are accustomed to Web service designs, and who do not have a traditional service creation background.

The SDP group was formed by the Telecom knowledge community and led by François Mouillaud, currently one of the community leaders. The white paper is a 2007 update of an initial version (released internally in May 2006), which has been reviewed, augmented and improved by several contributors in Devoteam group, including Devoteam Consulting, Devoteam SRIT, and the French division of auSystems (recently acquired from Teleca), which has deep knowledge and current practice of service creation in OSA/Parlay environments.

As such, it gathers expertise from all companies in the group: market awareness, functional expertise through service definition, field practice with support and introduction in operational networks, and technological master through service development and integration in various environments (Intelligent Network, IMS).

I’m a student of the University of Padua (Italy). I’ve appreciated this white paper expecially the part concerning my interests (i.e. the initial overview and the explanation of the 3 models parlay, jain and oma).
